04 / How It Goes Wrong

Deepfake

Realistic fake audio, video or images of real people, made with generative AI. Increasingly used in fraud, such as a cloned voice asking finance to make an urgent payment.

How you’ll hear it

“The CFO called and approved the transfer.”

“Did you call back on a known number? Voices can be cloned.”

Avoid

Treating a familiar voice or face as proof of identity.

The longer version

Deepfakes are now cheap and convincing, and fraud has followed. The defence is procedural rather than technical: verify requests through a second, independent channel, and make sure staff know that urgency plus an unusual request is the warning sign.
